SMART Board for Beginners

A SMART board is nothing without the Notebook software, which is the focus of this class. You will learn about the software so that you can create and edit Notebook lessons (as there several great ones already out there).

Timeframe:

There is a weekly module from September 12-October 10.

Requirements:

Each week you have a required Smart Notebook file that you will be creating and uploading back to Moodle for the TRT facilitator to check. You will be demonstrating weekly the concepts that you learned that week from the videos. At the end of the week, you will be uploading your Notebook file to Moodle for the TRT facilitator to review and check for accuracy.

Each week you should:

  • Read the Assignment for the week
  • Watch/listen to each of the SHORT training videos for the week
  • Practice the skills in each training video
  • E-mail/contact the facilitator with any questions/problems
  • Put together your Smart Notebook file using the skills for that week
  • Upload your Smart Notebook file to the dropbox in Moodle for each week
  • See the TRT during planning (with advance notice) for additional help and support

Session 1: Getting Started

The Basics of SMART Notebook Software

3. After watching the training videos this week, Open Smart Notebook and create a new Smart Notebook file that demonstrates the following:
- Contains at least 3 pages/slides

Session 2: Moving Ahead in Notebook

Expanding on Notebook Basics with Properties and Right Click Options

After completing session one, you are now familiar with the basic tools that are available when using Notebook software. Please refer back to prior videos at anytime.
When designing Notebook files, consider how learners will interact with the pages on the SMARTboard. The drop down menu available from a right-click on any object gives you a variety of functions. This session, improve upon your 3 page file from session 1 by adding some creativity and functionality. Expand on Notebook Basics with Properties and Right Click Options

For this session:
1. Watch the training videos for this session.

2. Re-Submit your Notebook file from week/session 1 that WILL NOW include:

The Lesson Activity Toolkit allows teachers to quickly develop interactive lessons to engage learners. Make sure to spend time exploring each folder, but start in the Examples folder. To see more samples, follow the link (under course resources) to the SMART Exchange.

For this session:
1. Watch the training videos for this session.

Session 4: Sharing Interactive Learning Activities

Develop and Share Your Own Notebook Files

CONGRATULATIONS!!

You've now successfully designed a Notebook file. Post your final Notebook file and join the discussion about your experience.
Don't forget to take care of your end-of-course housekeeping: Do your My Learning Plan Survey when it is available.

A group of us (TRTs) are designing a level two and a level three course right now. We will be rolling the level two course out later this fall as a countywide class. Please consider enrolling in that class which will go into a few more of the tools we didn't touch on and a little more about some actual integration ideas.
